GCBF 2014 – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

In its 22nd year, the Great Canadian Beer Festival (GCBF) held in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada brings together the very best of North American craft breweries showcasing some of the country’s best craft beers.

With 58 beer booths, there was definitely something for everyone.

If it’s your first time on the beer festival grounds, the first thing you’d likely notice is how well everything has been organized and set up. One of the biggest disappointments for large scale events like this is the usual lack of organization which tends to lead to such things as: running out of water, food or other product, not having enough staff, not enough porta potties, not enough / no security etc.

It was obvious that the people behind the GCBF have been tweaking things year after year and, after 22 years they’ve got everything down pat.  With upwards of 1000 volunteers and over 10,000 beer lovers in attendance at the 2014 Great Canadian Beer Festival, you couldn’t have asked for a better time – beautiful weather, beautiful people and great tasting brews.  What more could you ask for?

Vancouver Island Brewery
Vancouver Island Brewery was the Island’s first craft brewery. From humble beginnings in a small warehouse in Central Saanich in 1984 we began by handcrafting a small selection of draught only products for pub customers on Vancouver Island.

Tree Brewing Company
BREWED. BY US. FOR U. KELOWNA BC. Since 1996, we’ve been taking craft beer seriously. We brew in small batches using only water, malt, hops and yeast to produce the highest quality, award winning beer.

Lighthouse Brewing Company
Lighthouse Brewing Company is a progressive thinking microbrewery producing a distinct range of all natural beers. We began our brewing tradition in 1998 when the first kegs of Race Rocks Amber Ale rolled out to the Victoria public.

Saltspring Island Ales
From deep in our mountain spring comes the cleanest, freshest water for our Saltspring Island Ales. Piped straight from the spring into our tiny brew house, this gorgeous water is combined with natural ingredients to create a lineup of distinctly Island-made ales. Our beer is made in small batches using traditional, unhurried methods.

Steamworks
In 1995, when we first took hold of our historic Gastown brewpub location, we discovered that the building had a rare steam heat system. A remnant from forward thinkers of a century past.

Tofino Brewing Co
Our brewery was built around a few basic ideas: brewing great beer, being a positive addition to our town, and operating in a sustainable and locally focused manner.

Yukon Beer
Yukon Brewing opened its doors in 1997 under the name Chilkoot Brewing Co. Ltd. Owners Alan and Bob conceived their idea like many Yukon babies – around a campfire on a canoe trip. Both Ontario natives, they’ve lived and worked in the Territory for a good deal of their adult lives. From that inaugural conversation grew plans for a craft brewery that would service the north with quality beer while keeping jobs and money in the territory.

Big Rock Brewery
1984 was a simpler time. Men were men, hard drives were just how you got to Edmonton and beer was either “lager A” or “lager B”. But noted beer fan Ed McNally was thirsty for a real choice. And rather than complicate matters by tracking down established import brews, Ed took the “easy” way out and started his own brewery.

Coal Harbour Brewing
We are one of Vancouver’s newest craft breweries.
We brew classic lagers and award winning ales, and anything else left of center. Rather than make beer that you would only want to try once, we want you to enjoy a satisfying, ‘sessionable’ experience with your pint!

Bomber Brewing
I suppose you could say it’s a truly Canadian story – hockey, friendship and beer. From the ice rink to the brewery, Bomber Brewing is the shared dream of three friends with a passion for playing hockey and savouring good beer. We drafted a team, combined our skills, and in February of 2014, we launched one of the newest micro-breweries to hit the Vancouver scene.

Cannery Brewing
Located amidst the breathtaking scenery of Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, our micro-brewery produces individually crafted fine ales and lagers of unmistakable complexity and balance. This flavour is the result of wonderful combinations of premium quality malted grains and carefully chosen Pacific Northwest hops.

Granville Island Brewing
In 1984 something happened that forever changed the local beer industry: Granville Island Brewing opened the doors to Canada’s first microbrewery. And in doing so, we opened hearts and minds to a whole new beer drinking experience. Driven by a firm belief that the West was ready for a premium, natural, unpasteurized beer Granville Island Brewing introduced locals to our now famous Island Lager.

Stanley Park Brewery

At Creemore Springs, we’re renowned for being different – in part because we remain 100 years behind the times, in deed and in thought. We make our beer in small batches, in an open flame copper kettle, using the same painstaking methods as the European brew masters of the 1800’s.

Hoyne Brewing Company
Very few people get to study craft beer under one of the pioneers of the North American micro-brewery movement. Frank Appleton taught me what it means to make great beer, and I am truly grateful for that.

“Make great beer,” Frank told me. “The rest will follow.” While my understanding of the craft has matured over the years, Frank gave me the foundation I needed. I strive to create interesting and thoroughly enjoyable beer. Beer that looks good in the glass, feels good in the mouth, and lifts the spirit—and for that, I am proud.

Merridale Estate Cidery
At Merridale, we use cider apple varieties that have been proven for centuries in England, France, and Germany to make the best cider. All of our ciders are made from 100% pure juice, and only the first pressing is used. We do not add water or re-press the apples to increase the yield because we believe this compromises the flavour.
